Miami-Dade Expressway Public Communications

The MDX Authority conducted formal community outreach campaigns to determine public interest in and support for two major projects for adoption in the 2030 Long Range Transportation Plan. The $185-million U.S. 1 Express Project was intended to more effectively utilize available rights-of-way and capacity within the South Miami-Dade corridor, creating tolled, congestion-priced lanes as a bypass to the heavily congested U.S. 1. The Connect 4XPress Project focused on improving transportation linkages to the region’s major employment and economic activity centers, including Miami International Airport, by providing direct expressway connection to the regional transportation system for north-central Miami-Dade County.

Services Provided: The Allen Group provided public communications consulting services. Staff developed and implemented a community outreach and public participation program to help MDX measure community interest and build support for each of the proposed projects. Responsibilities included: developing a database of affected stakeholders; creating informational collateral and presentation materials; conducting a series of workshops and informational town-hall style meetings to engage and inform the strategic stakeholders of the project and its benefits; as well as conducting one-on-one project briefings/interviews with a target audience to get focused feedback on issues and concerns, special circumstances, and potential problems.
