BART 19th Street Station Modernization Project
Project Description: BART completed its multi-year 19th Street Station modernization in downtown Oakland 50 years after initial construction. Three paid areas have been merged into one continuous open platform and new fare gates and glass barriers were added, transforming the look and feel of the iconic station and eliminating hidden corners to improve safety.
The station upgrade reflects Uptown Oakland’s history as a mecca for music, dance, and entertainment. The glass and metal barriers surrounding the concourse feature a curtain pattern, and the station’s phone alcoves were transformed into lighted kiosk displays for rotating artwork that brighten the stairwells.
Other improvements include repair of the station’s terrazzo flooring and ceramic wall tiles and the addition of bike channels. A new north-end concourse- to-platform elevator and energy-efficient LED lighting were installed, and the station’s renovated restrooms reopened in February 2022.
