BART Next Generation Fare Gates
Project Description:
The Next Generation Fare Gates Project has transformed the rider experience and modernized fare collection throughout the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system.
BART’s $90-million priority project involves replacing more than 750 fare gates across all 50 BART stations. This initiative aims to upgrade legacy fare gates to next-generation models that reduce fare evasion, enhance customer experience, and leverage new technology for improved performance.
The new gated entry points discourage fare evasion and offer improved safety and circulation for BART riders, with each gate accommodating up to 30 passengers per minute. 3D sensors detect wheelchairs, bikes, and strollers, adjusting gate movement and timing accordingly.
Services Provided:
As the Owner’s Representative and Construction Manager, The Allen Group provides oversight, coordination, and leadership to ensure successful delivery of this critical system upgrade.
TAG supports the BART Fare Gates Project by providing comprehensive project planning and coordination with BART’s project management team, fare gate vendors, station operators, installation contractors, and design teams to develop and manage implementation schedules. TAG oversaw construction activities on-site while working with contractors, station staff, and safety teams to maintain safe work zones and ensure ADA compliance.
The team coordinated the phased installation approach to minimize disruptions to active transit operations, while monitoring progress to meet project milestones and controlling costs to remain within budget. TAG also provided quality assurance and technical support by inspecting work for compliance with design, accessibility, and safety standards, and by ensuring integration with the Clipper system.
